Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some frequently asked questions you may have about Black Therapist & Company. To schedule an appointment, please fill out our screening form here for us to best meet your needs.
To begin, you’ll complete a brief screening questionnaire here. To help us better understand your needs, we’ll begin by asking a few brief questions about what you’re looking for in therapy, your availability, and any current concerns related to safety or substance use. Your responses help us determine whether our services are a good fit and ensure we can provide the most appropriate support for you.
If we believe we’re able to meet your needs, Oregon residents who plan to use insurance will be asked to complete a short insurance verification form. Once insurance has been verified (for Oregon clients using insurance), or if you are not using insurance, you’ll receive an email invitation to set up your secure telehealth portal.
Through the portal, you’ll complete our onboarding paperwork, including informed consent forms and other documents needed to begin services.
Instead of treating culture as a side note, therapy will actively explore how factors like ethnicity, race, religion, language, family structure, immigration history, or community norms shape:
- Your values and beliefs
- How you understand mental health
- How you express emotions or cope
You won’t have to “translate” your experience into a dominant cultural lens.
After completing our screening form, we offer 30 min consultations for $150.00 upon request. We are unable to bill insurance for consultations.
Yes, you’re welcome to request a specific therapist based on their profile on our website. We’ll do our best to match you with your preferred provider; however, availability and insurance coverage may vary.
We understand that insurance coverage can play an important role in making mental health care accessible. Due to significant changes within the insurance landscape, our practice has transitioned primarily to a self-pay model. This allows us to offer greater flexibility in treatment, spend more time focused on client care, and minimize some of the administrative requirements that can impact the therapeutic process.
We are happy to discuss our fees and, when appropriate, provide documentation that may be submitted for out-of-network reimbursement.
For clients residing in Oregon, and for some clients in Washington, we remain in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, MODA, Providence (ends 12/31/2026), Kaiser, PacificSource, and CareOregon/Health Share/OHP. We are glad to help you determine whether your plan is eligible for coverage.
Our session rates ranges from $150 – $250 per session depending on provider type, modality (individual, couples, family) and session type (intake, follow-up, etc.)
Yes, we offer a limited number of reduced-fee (sliding scale) sessions based on financial need. Availability can vary, so we recommend reaching out to discuss current options and determine what may work for you.
The therapist will explain:
- Who they are (their approach and style)
- Confidentiality (what stays private and the few exceptions)
- How sessions typically work
You’ll be invited to talk about what brought you in. This can be:
- A specific issue (anxiety, relationships, stress)
- A general feeling (“I don’t feel like myself”)
You don’t need a perfect explanation—just start where you can.
You can also ask questions here—this is a two-way fit, not just them evaluating you.
Expect some questions about your life, such as:
- Family and upbringing
- Cultural or ethnic background
- Religion or spirituality (if relevant)
- Community, identity, or migration experiences
- Traumatic experiences
- Physical health (dental, vision, preventative screenings, annual physical, PCP, etc.)
In culturally specific therapy, these aren’t just “checklist” questions—they shape how your therapist understands your experience.
The therapist might ask:
- “What would you like to be different?”
- “What does feeling better look like to you?”
It’s okay if you don’t know yet—figuring that out can be part of the process.
Finally, you and your therapist will decide on next steps which may include: no further sessions, referral to more appropriate care, or scheduling follow-up session to continue assessment and/or treatment goals.
